Every person who has made a successful application via their respective Sledding or Working Club for registration of a musher, registration of his sled dogs, or handled a dog, officiated, taken part in any Mushing or Working Event, holds membership, is a KUSA registered or unregistered owner, or holds membership of any affiliated club, federation or association, national or international, shall be bound to this SADSA Code of Ethics relating to responsible dog ownership including the keeping, mushing & working, welfare, breeding, selling and disposing of dogs as detailed below.
1. Attempt in order to promote the highest ideals among sled dog owners and breeders ensure the safety and well-being of all dogs owned by me is my first priority at all times.
2. Ensure that at all times such dogs are properly housed, watered, exercised and will receive Veterinary attention from a qualified person, as and when required;
3. Provide adequate shelter for any dog/s kept outside the house or premises;
4. To follow the rules of good sportsmanship in all sled dog events and activities.
5. Attempt to help and befriend novice mushers, sledding enthusiasts, breeders and pet owners.
6. Help to encourage sled dog owners to train and work their dogs in harness so that the primary function of these breeds may be perpetuated.
7. Never to participate in mushing/sledding without proper safety equipment.
8. Ensure that the exercise area for such dogs be of sufficient size for the movement of such dog/s and to have the exercise area/s fenced or walled so as to restrict the movement of such dog/s to their property and that the exercise area is kept clean;
9. Ensure that correct control is exercised with regard to Municipal Meter Readers, Postmen etc, whilst recognizing at the same time that such dog is there to protect the owners and their property;
10. Ensure that such dog/s does not cause a public nuisance to any neighbour;
11. Not allow such dogs to roam at large, keep their dogs on a lead, and under effective control, in all Public spaces, except those specially designated where the dogs must be trained to return on command;
12. Clean up after such dogs according to Municipal Regulations in any Public place or place where they are being exhibited or exercised;
13. Not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of mushing and their breeds, nor falsely advertise or mislead any person regarding the performance and/or quality or health of any dog;
14. Ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from them clearly understand their responsibilities for the care and welfare of such dogs and they, the new owners, have the time and facilities to undertake their obligations as laid down in this Code of Ethics;
15. Provide to all persons acquiring dogs from them, whether by sale or gift or some other means, written details of all dietary and immunization requirements and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements and responsible dog ownership;
16. Ensure that the correct inoculations, as required by law, are administered at the proper time;
17. Ensure that prompt qualified medical attention is administered should they become sick or injured;
18. Bring to the attention of the appropriate authority cases of alleged fraud, dishonesty, cruelty or neglect and not commit such offences themselves;
19. Will not engage in dog fighting;
20. Being in good standing;
· by having completed and signed Application Form at your Club;
· submitting a signed Mushers Check List and Release Form with
every Event Entry;
· submitting certified copies of KUSA Pedigree Certification for purebred entries;
· submitting proof of dog's identification with Vet Health Certificate as proof of
vaccinations;
· not have had any disciplinary action successfully brought against you either by a
Club or SADSA,
· haven't engaged in any activity which would have brought sled dog sport, name of
any organization or person involved in the sport, into disrepute.
21. Any person or persons as designated above who fails to observe any of the provisions of the Code of Ethics as detailed, resulting in a judgment against such person or persons in a Court of Law, may be dealt with in terms of the SADSA Disciplinary Code.
SADSA is entitled to take actions against any affiliated club members and/or members of the public attending any SADSA sanctioned event and/or events hosted by affiliated Clubs by inflicting penalties, if members do not respect the objectives of common interest of SADSA or their Clubs, or because of breaking of a Constitution, Bylaws and/or arrangements and rules.
1. Penalties Inflicted by SADSA:
· Warning Notice,
· Remonstrance drawing attention to the fact that a request for exclusion from the
SADSA has been initiated,
· Financial penalty, not exceeding three -3- times the amount of the annual
membership fee,
· Exclusion from any particular event, for a period not exceeding 12 month
Suspension of a member for a full calendar season not exceeding 6 months
· Anti-doping violation on the musher in person or any of his dogs will results in a
immediate ban for a minimum of 2 calendar years to life following the offence
applied on the musher.
· Banned from SADSA sanctioned events and any affiliated Club activities.
The Club Committee is competent for the treatment and application of penalties at Executive and Club membership level.
2.The following ground may generate a total ban:
· Prejudice actions against SADSA and/or affiliated Club level, inclusive of acting
without authority,
· Severe or continuous braking of the SADSA and/or the affiliated Club Constitution.
as well as its bylaws, decisions or rules,
· Insult to members or the national Executive, Executive Council and/or affiliated
Club level, as well as in case of improper and unfair behavior in Club events and/or
activities and/or events organized by other organizations, thus discrediting SADSA,
affiliated Clubs, any members of affiliated Clubs.
· rank breaking of documental basis of sporting behavior, SADSA and/or affiliated
Clubs interest or behavior against the animals rights.
3.Process rules
· When a process is initiated, reproaches are notified in writing to the defendant. In
this respect the defendant is invited to express his view, within three -3- weeks
following the notification, together with any proof that could discharge the
defendant.
· All processes will occur without public knowledge, either orally or in writing,
whereas the initiation and the defendant reply must be in writing,
· Decisions concerning the application of penalties are taken with an ordinary
majority.
Minutes are drafted for all meetings concerned with penalties. A written notice is then sent to the defendant, specifying the sanction inflicted by SADSA and the reasons having led to such actions as determined by the Executive Council.
